Crater Lake, OR
July - October
Crater Lake is home to the deepest lake in the United States, and one of the deepest in the world at 1,949 feet. Formed from the collapse of the ancient volcano Mount Mazama, it's a caldera filled with rainwater and snowmelt, with no rivers flowing in or out. It's also boasts some extremely dark skies, making Milky Way photography a fantastic opportunity in the summer once the snow melts and the ring road opens. The snow depth at Crater Lake in the winter averages over 44 FEET making most of the area inaccessible. It can be as late as July before the road around the lake is clear of snow.
